Akbar gave Mian Tansen the title of 'Mian', but the title 'Tansen' was given to him by the Raja Vikramjit of Gwalior. Akbar patronised Tansen of Gwalior who is credited with composing many new melodies (ragas). Tansen was one of the best-known dhrupad singers and one of the nine jewels of Emperor Akbar's court. He composed Dhrupads on Hindu gods and goddesses, and also composed songs on his patrons.
