Hampi's ruins are a reflection of the Vijayanagara empire, founded in 1336 by Harihara I and Bukka Raya I. The empire fell in the Battle of Talikota in 1565. The credit for bringing Hampi's ruins to light in 1800 goes to Colonel Colin Mackenzie, an engineer and antiquarian working for the English East India Company.
