UPSC CSE Pre 1998

B. Revenue assigned in lieu of salary
C. Excess amount paid to the exchequer by the Iqtadars
D. Illegal exactions extracted from the peasants
Answer: Excess amount paid to the exchequer by the Iqtadars
Option c is the correct answer.
Iqtadars or Muqtis after meeting his and army's expenses had to send the surplus revenue to the Centre. This surplus amount was called fawazil. The demand to send the excess amounts (fawazil) to the diwan-i wizarat was symbolic of the trend towards centralization. The muqti had to submit accounts of their realisation and expenditure to the treasury. Auditing was severe to prevent fraud.
