C. 1, 2 and 3
D. None

Answer: 1 and 2 only

Option b is the correct answer. Option 1 is correct. A mural is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other permanent surfaces. The early mural paintings may be assumed to be the prototypes of the carved and painted picture galleries of the subsequent periods of the Buddhist art, such as in the painted cave temples of Ajanta situated in Maharashtra State near Aurangabad. The subject matter of these paintings is almost exclusively Buddhist, excepting decorative patterns on the ceilings and the pillars. They are mostly associated with the Jatakas, collection of stories, recording the previous births of the Lord Buddha. Option 2 is correct. The temples at Lepakshi are the location of mural paintings of the Vijayanagara kings. The Veerabhadra temple at Lepakshi is known for its architecture and mural paintings. The mural paintings on the walls and roof of the mandapas of the Veerabhadra temple helps one in understanding the cultural practices, the religious beliefs and the popular mythological stories of the 16th century Rayalaseema region. Option 3 is incorrect. Mural paintings are not found in the Sanchi Stupa. Important Tips Sanchi Stupa is a UNESCO World heritage site located in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh. The stupa comprises of a semi-spherical dome, circumambulatory pathways called Pradakshinapatha along with pillared structured gateways called Toranas, also the most evocative in a Stupa's architectural style. These Toranas have Jataka stories which narrate previous births of Buddha, and narrative depiction of several of Buddha's life events.
